Thanks For The Honeymoon

Season 5, Episode 111
Original air date: January 9, 1973

Written by: Mel Goldberg
Directed by: Richard Benedict

I enjoy this episode for Patty Duke's devilish role as Toni, a small-time con woman who cons McGarrett and Manicote into giving her and her husband, Marty, a wedding and a honeymoon at a resort. McGarrett buys into it reluctantly because Toni promises to testify against big fish Manola, a drug kingpin that McGarrett has been trying to put away for years. It's a quirky story but is executed with a good mix of drama and humor (see, especially, the wedding scene). There's also a rare subplot involving an old flame of McGarrett, Margo, played by Carol Lawrence.

Some of the best episodes involved McGarrett and Manicote arguing over a case.

This is McGarrett's I'm-pretty-sure-I'm-going-to-regret-this look.

Toni recounts for McGarrett and Manicote how Manola (whose name always makes me think of shoes) committed a murder she witnessed.

At least this car-over-the-cliff shot doesn't use the dreadful stock footage used in so many other episodes (see e.g. "Highest Castle, Deepest Grave").

McGarrett goes over inconsistencies in Toni's story.

A very peculiar wedding.

This is really not McGarrett's thing.

A not-so-warm greeting by McGarrett for his old flame, photojournalist Margo Cooper.

Norman Wright as the minister arguably gets the best scene of the episode.

I'm guessing McGarrett's not a fan of the wedding rice toss.

McGarrett and Margo find time to reunite. We learn it's been eight years since their breakup.

Manola's very unlikely-looking hit man fleshes out the defenses that McGarrett has set up for Toni.

Margo's efforts to flesh out McGarrett's defenses are, for the time being, ineffective as well.

Manola's lethal team comes up with a plan.

How's that for advertising?

McGarrett again uncharacteristically steps away from his work. He must really dig this Margo.

Meanwhile, Manola and his team aren't taking any breaks.

Chin is distracted while protecting food intended for Toni.

McGarrett's defenses are also compromised.

McGarrett discovers a disaster. Toni and Marty have been poisoned.

With Marty dying and Toni recovering, McGarrett and Margo have their final parting. Neither will give up their career for the other.

McGarrett then must tell Toni that her husband is dead. She lets it slip that she never planned to testify, which McGarrett suspected all along. He gets pissed off with her anyway.

McGarrett leads Manola to believe Toni is dead. He reveals to him (foolishly?) that she is not and that she will testify now.

This is McGarrett's you're-going-down look.
